Melon-shaped Celadon Ewer
12th century, Goryeo Dynasty
The body was divided into eight sections and the exterior surface was beaten to create a realistic melon shape with eight sections. The vine-shaped curving spout and handle and the melon-shaped lid are in good harmony. This ewer has a thick coat of jade-green glaze, which melted well without crazing. Inside the lid is a long point. Glaze was not applied to the point area or the interior of the spout. The foot was not separately made. The glaze was wiped from the base before firing. It is assumed that this vessel was produced in Gangjin in the early twelfth century.
