Portrait of Yu Su
Jin Jae-hae, 1726, Joseon Dynasty, Treasure No. 1176, Entrusted by the Yu Clan of Jinju
Yu Su (1678~?) was a civil minister in the late Joseon dynasty. This was painted by Jin Jae-hae (1691~1769). He served in the Painting Academy during King Yeong-jo¡¯s rule. On the upper right, there is a colophon written by Yu Su himself on his 62nd birthday looking at it 13 years after it was painted. It¡¯s a full-length portrait of him seated on a chair and clad in an official garment. His face is worked with exquisite lines reflecting his soft yet upright personality which attests to the excellent talent of the painter, Jin Jae-hae. Jin Jae-hae wrote a letter, concerning this portrait, which is still extant and is a rare example carrying great historical significance.
